Imagining the sounds of the post-folk. The Future Sounds Of Folk takes diverse musical traditions as a starting point for the development of new amalgams of contemporary music. In 2010, STEIM supported Singaporean musician Marc Chia aka One Man Nation’s research in Indonesia to work with local musicians and organized events. There he met Sudanese musicians Iman Rohman aka Jimbot and instrument builder and musician from East Java Wukir Suryadi aka Bamboo Wukir. During Dec 1 – 18th, these three musicians come to the Netherlands for an artist-in-residency and a series of concerts. In different cities and venues they will collaborate with local musicians such as Machinefabriek, Pierre Bastien, Andy Moor, Yannis Kyriakides, Michael Moore and dj sniff.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES:
Iman Rohman aka Jimbot is a Sundanese musician actively investigating the use of traditional Sundanese music with a contemporary expression. In recent years, Jimbot has been involved with Bandung-based new media lab Common Room and their engagement with the local communities in developing the skills and knowledge needed to explore the possibilities of using local instruments and traditional expressions in new and profound ways. Jimbot is also part of the Karinding Attack and TRAH projects.
Wukir Suryadi AKA Bambu Wukir is a musician originally from East Java, now living in Jogja- karta. He performs with a self-made instrument constructed from bamboo that resembles the Sasando from Rote, an island part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. However there are distinct differences between Wukir and Sasando music both in the shape and how the instrument is played through guitar pickups and loop pedals. He has per- formed throughout Indonesia at large festivals such as the Gamelan International Festival, Solo International Ethnic Music and Percussion Festival Gwalk in Jogjakarta, Surakarta and Surabaya.
Marc Chia aka One Man Nation, is a musician with a background in media and sound art. Graduating in 2009 with a Master´s in Media Design from the Piet Zwart Institute in the Netherlands, he investigates social and psychological situations related to tradition and its progression, the future through the eyes of history, and spirituality in technology through the medium of sound and performance. Past and current collaborations include but not limited to Pierre Bastien, Shaun Sankaran, C-drik Fermont, Dr Truna, Kato Hideki, Hilary Jeffrey, Richard Scott, Alfredo Genovesi, Soopa Collective, Iman Zimbot, Bambu Wukir and has performed internationally at the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao), ISEA (Ruhr), Mapping (Geneva), Piksel (Bergen), MEM (Bilbao), STEIM Jamboree (Amsterdam), Makeart (Poitiers), Fete 0.1 (Orléans) and SummerLAB (Gijon) amongst others. Yannis Kyriakides was born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1969 and in 1975 emigrated with his family to Britain. Later being drawn by the music of Louis Andriessen to move to The Netherlands, with whom he studied under at the Hague Conservatory and collaborated on three projects with the maverick conceptual sound artist Dick Raaijmaakers. As a composer and sound artist he strives to create new forms and hybrids of media, synthesizing disparate sound sources and exploring spatial and temporal experience. He has focused in the majority of his work on ways of combining traditional performance practices with digital media. His has written over ninety compositions, and has been featured composer at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2007 and will be in November Music Festival 2011. He has released about 10 CD’s of his music of which the most recent is ‘Antichamber’, a double CD collection of electroacoustic chamber music, which won a French Qwartz electronic music award. The CD ‘Wordless’ recieved an honorary mention in the Prix Ars Electronica 2006. Together with Andy Moor and Isabelle Vigier he founded and runs the CD label for innovative new electronic music, UNSOUNDS. He is artistic director of Ensemble MAE, and teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. www.kyriakides.com
Rutger Zuydervelt aka Machinefabriek was born on 28 July 1978 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), but now resides in Rotterdam. He started working as Machinefabriek in 2004. The name (meaning ‘machine factory’) was on the façade of a building Rutger passed everytime he went shopping for groceries. Except for a few piano and guitar lessons when he was young, Rutger didn’t study music. Instead, he graduated as a graphic designer. The sleeves of his releases are practically always designer by Rutger himself, being a crucial part of the music. Machinefabriek’s music combines elements of ambient, modern classical, minimalism, drone and field recordings. His pieces unfold as ‘films without image’, with a sharp ear for detail. After releasing a series of self released CD-Rs, the official debut, ‘Marijn’, was issued by Lampse in 2006. Since then a solid stream of singles and albums was released on labels like Type, 12K, Spekk, Dekorder, Digitalis, Experimedia and Staalplaat. www.machinefabriek.nu
Andy Moor was born in London in1962. He began his musical life in Edinburgh, Scotland playing guitar with the band Dog Faced Hermans, a multi faceted eclectic group that mixed energetic post punk energy with traditional tunes and improvisations…. In 1990 he moved to the Netherlands after an invitation to join Dutch band The Ex and continues to be a full time member of this band….the openess and versatility of the musicians in this group has brought them intocontact with many musicians from different scenes and backgrounds..including Tom Cora(cello), Han Bennink(drums), Wolter Wierbos(trombone), Djibril Diabate (kora) John Butcher (sax) and Anne james Chaton (sound poet).
Pierre Bastien (born Paris, 1953) post-graduated in eighteenth-century French literature at University Paris-Sorbonne. In 1977 he built his first musical machinery. For the next ten years he has been composing for dance companies and playing with Pascal Comelade. In the meantime he was constantly developing his mechanical orchestra. Since 1987 he concentrates on it through solo performances, sound installations, recordings and collaborations with such artists as Pierrick Sorin, Karel Doing, Jean Weinfeld, Robert Wyatt or Issey Miyake. In the recent years, Pierre Bastien and his machines collaborated with video artist Pierrick Sorin, fashion designer Issey Miyake, British singer and composer Robert Wyatt, Trottola circus company, musicians Alexei Aigi, Steve Arguelles and Phonophani. Michael Moore was born in Arcata, California, where he played in clubs and attended school before moving to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory of Music.
There he worked with Joseph Allard, Jaki Byard, Joe Maneri, Gunther Schuller, George Russell and others. After spending two years in NYC he moved to Amsterdam, where he has lived since 1984. He currently works with Available Jelly, Jewels & Binoculars, Franky Douglas, Achim Kaufmann, Dave Douglas, Fred Hersch, Benoit Delbecq, Eric Boeren, Paul Berner and his own pro! jects include the White Widow Quartet, the Monitor Trio w/ Cor Fuhler and Tristan Honsinger and the Michael Moore Quintet. www.ramboyrecordings.com
dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) plays the playback through scratching, cutting and stuttering various records that reflect his influences from Free Improvisation to Hip Hop. He is also Artistic Director of STEIM and has co-curatored and produced The Future Sounds of Folk project.
